Lars Vilks Attacked

Lars Vilks, the Swedish cartoonist, was attacked at Uppsalla University. He drew Muhammad with the body of a dog. He was giving a lecture at the university on the boundaries of free speech in art. He was violently attacked by Muslim students yelling Allah Akbar. It might be wrong to show Muhammad in the Muslim way of thinking, but and this is a big but, it does not mean that one can act violently against someone making a statement in a cartoon or in the press. You can protest peacefully. Al Queda has put a price on Lars Vilks head for this cartoon. This goes back to the Danish cartoonist recently who is still in protective custody for drawing Muhammad. Even further to Salmon Rushdie book the Satanic Verses when the Ayatollah of Iran put a price on his head. Rushdie's book is fiction and doubt that the cleric in Iran even read it, but was simply told about it. The hypocrisy it when you look at the Muslim literature in the middle east now they disparage and draw hateful cartoons and write hateful literature on Christians, Jews, atheists etc. And they call themselves a religion of peace, Bull! If the moderate muslims really hate the violence they should say so, by their very non-criticism of the violence they endorse it. Free Speech means that anyone has the right to say what he or she thinks, even if it offends, especially if it offends. Not to do so opens the door to intolerance, hatred and eventually oppression.
