Yesterday, a man with a sign and a T-shirt was around 3-4 pm standing at the local high school. He was preaching and handing out pamphlets to high school students. His signs had something to do with getting saved as the end of the world is at hand. To the credit of the students only about 1/2 dozen were even listing, but the idea again that a person so obviously delusional was actually trying to preach to the young was disgusting and humorous. Maybe the poor economy with a falling stock market, the election with the potentional of a 1/2 black man being elected to the highest post in the nation or the war against terrorism may have had something to do with it. For 2000 years people have been forcasting the end of the world. Some became sects that died out or some became religions in their own right. Recent examples include the Millerites of the 19th century that have "evolved" into Jehovah witnesses or 7 day adventist or both. I don't remember which. Nostradamous, was a seer who saw the end of the world. Now the Maya prediction of 2012 as the end. The point is there are so many and they all have their own take on it and ways of being saved. NO EVIDENCE for any of it. But what is worrisome is there is Sarah Palin who is a fundamentalist evangelical who has stated that she believes that she will see the end times. John McCain is old enough that she stands a good chance to inherit the Presidency. And her finger will be on the nuclear trigger. Also, we all know how prophecies become self fulfilling. It is scary and should make one take pause and think.
