Anti-Blasphemy

Monday the 24, 2008 will go down as a black day in the cause of freedom of speech and the UN. The islamic countries , probably through intimdation and guile, got backing for an anti-blasphemy measure called "Combating Defamation of Religions". It passed 85-50 with 42 abstentions from spinless countries in a key UN General Assembly committee. It will enter the international record later in the year. The drafts sponsors say it will prevent violence against worshippers regardless of religion. But lets be candid here. What it will do is provide cover for domestic anti-blasphemy laws with the purpose of stifling freedom of speech and relgious freedom, particularly in muslim countries. This resolution is part of a 10 year plan by the 57 state member organization called the Organiztion of Islamic Conference, which was launched in 2005. While the resolution is non-binding the OIC wants and plans for a new convention on the issue that would impose terms on signatory states of the UN. Any idea religous or otherwise should be able to stand on its own merits in the face of criticism. The only ideas that require force of law are freedom of speech, religion, press, and individual rights of people. If any idea of religious nature such as muslim, christian, hindu, hebrew etc require that it not be criticized then the leaders are afraid that they are espousing lies that will be found out, or will not stand up to closer examination. They generally more afraid that their hold and control over a population is in doubt. And they want to impose themselves and their ideas on others. This has led to death penalities for apostasy, baning South Park and the Simpsons etc. We must be on guard against such laws, measures etc. and be prepared to disobey these laws/ordinaces etc. because it is the duty of every thinking, liberty loving person to disobey and resist unlawful, unconstitutional, anti-right measures in any form any where.

Peace
