Simon Singh and the UK Chiropractors

Not too long ago Simon Singh, the science writer and coauthor of Trick or Treatment with Edzard Ernst, wrote a opinion saying that the chiropractors claims of treating diseases other than back problems as bogus. Well that claim was challenged in the British courts. The UK libel laws are a laughing stock as they allow almost anything. In fact England has gotten a reputation as a place to go to sue someone for libel if you just don't like them. The judge in a lower court upheld the libel suite. Simon is now appealing it. It is really about free speech. It is also about the fact there is no good science to back up their claims. The result has been an outpouring of support for Simon to the tune of over 10,000 signitures and growing. You can read about it at http://wwwsenseaboutscience.org/freedebate. The chiropractic organization in the UK has gone so far as to send a email and other communications to all the chiropractors in the UK to take down their web sites, especially if they advertise treating colic, etc. You can see that at http://quackometer.net/blog/2009/06/chiropractors-told-to-takedown-their.html. Support is growning to change the libel law in the UK. Please support Simon Singh and science. Libel laws should not interfer with science and legit debate.
